Common Wealth Shared Scholarships


The Commonwealth Scholarship is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). The first batch of 175 scholars arrived the UK in 1960, since then over 27,800 people have received the Commonwealth Scholarship. As part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to the commonwealth, around 800 students are given the opportunity to undertake postgraduate degrees with UK universities annually.


The scholarship provides:

  • The travel cost from and to your home country to the UK.
  • Approved tuition fees.
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,133 per month, or £1,390 for those at university in the London metropolitan area.
  • Warm clothing allowances, where applicable.
  • Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation, where applicable.
  • Study travel grant toward the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas.
  • If you are widowed, divorced, or a single parent, child allowance of £485 per month for the first child, and £120 per month for the second and third child under the age of 16, if you are accompanied by your children and they are living with you at the same address in the UK.
  • If you declare a disability, a full assessment of your needs and eligibility for additional financial support will be offered by the CSC.


To apply for a commonwealth scholarship

  • you must be a citizen or permanent resident of a commonwealth country.
  • You need to have an undergraduate honors degree of at least upper second class(2:1) or a second class lower (2:2) with an accompanying post graduate degree (preferably Master’s degree), you would also need to convince the admissions department about your reason(s) for applying for a second Master’s degree. If you want to study a PhD, you will need an appropriate master’s degree too.
  • You must be unable to afford to study in the UK without the scholarship.

To apply for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be available to start your academic activities in the UK by the UK academic year in September
  • Have provided all supporting documentation in the required formant.
  • Proof that you are a citizen or have refugee status of an eligible Commonwealth country e.g. a copy of your valid passport (or national ID card) showing your photograph, date of birth, and country of citizenship uploaded to the online application system
  • Full transcripts detailing all your higher education qualifications including to-date transcripts for any qualifications you are currently studying (with certified translations if not in English) – uploaded to the online application system
  • You must also provide the names and contact details of three referees

NOTE: CSC does not charge candidates to apply for any of its scholarships or fellowships through its online application system, and it does not charge organizations to nominate candidates.

Application Period

The scholarship for the 2022/2023 academic year is closed. Application for Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship for the academic year 2023/2024 has not started and would be updated on the Scholarship page and here on our blog.

Application Process

It is mandatory to make your application through the CSC’s online application system, together with any other application(s) that is required of you, by your chosen nominating body.

Bear in mind that the CSC will not accept nor process any application that is not submitted through their online application system.
