The scholarships were announced in February 2019 by John and Marcy McCall MacBain, through the McCall MacBain Foundation, a landmark gift of $200 million was given to the McGrill University for national and international candidates to study Masters degree programs.

At the time, it was the single largest gift in Canadian history. Based on their work over the years with some of the top scholarships around the world such as the Rhodes Scholarships in Oxford, the Mandela Rhodes Scholarships in Cape Town, and the Kupe Scholarships in New Zealand – they felt it was crucial that Canada have a comprehensive master’s-level scholarship that builds on, but is not limited to academic excellence. The McCall MacBain Scholarship is a full graduate scholarship that provides students with the mentorship, interdisciplinary learning, and global community they need to accelerate their impact on the world.

The McCall MacBain Scholarship covers over 150 different master’s programs and 3 second-entry professional undergraduate programs at McGill’s downtown and Macdonald campuses. The program must be pursued full-time and consist of 45 credits or more.




Applications are now open for the first global cohort. Up to 20 Canadians (citizens, permanent residents, and refugees) and 10 international candidates will be chosen as McCall MacBain Scholars for September 2023 admission. Applicants from all around the world are advised to apply for this scholarship. To be eligible for this scholarship:

  • Applicants must meet the minimum degree and language requirements for McGill master’s program admission.
  • Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or its recognized equivalent, or be on track to complete it by August 2023.




The McCall MacBain Scholarship covers tuition and fees for an eligible master’s program or a second-entry professional undergraduate program  at McGill as well as a living stipend of $2,000 CAD per month during academic terms. Scholars also participate in an intensive leadership development program, connect with mentors and advisors, and participate in a breadth of workshops and talks.

Canadian applicants will be eligible for up to 30 Finalist Awards ($10,000) and up to 28 Regional Awards ($5,000). Finalist Awards may be used for full-time master’s or professional studies at McGill, while Regional Awards are tenable at any public university in Canada.

All other applicants, including U.S. applicants, are eligible for 20 International Finalist Awards ($20,000). The International Finalist Awards may be used for full-time master’s or professional studies at McGill.



The only institution in this category is the McGill University.



You can apply for the McCall MacBain Scholarship in 2022 if you are planning to apply for Fall 2023 admission to a full-time master’s or second-entry professional undergraduate program at McGill University. Programs with Summer 2023 admission only are also acceptable. The program must consist of 45 credits or more and take place primarily on McGill’s downtown or Macdonald campuses.


Application Period

The application period for the 2022/2023 academic session is currently open, it started on the 1st of June 2022.

Students and graduates of universities in Canada and the United States, as well as Canadians abroad, should apply by September 21, 2022.

  • Applications due: September 21, 2022 at 4:00 PM ET
  • Regional interviews: November 5 – December 2, 2022
  • Final interviews: March 8-12, 2023
  • Classes begin: September 2023

All other applicants must apply by August 25, 2022.

Application Process


NOTE: After submitting your scholarship application, you must apply to at least one McGill University program by the program’s application deadline, or in December at the latest if you are selected for McCall MacBain Scholarship final interviews.
