What would you do if a genie appeared in a bottle or a Djinn appeared to you and granted you three wishes to use as you pleased? Be specific about what you need to fulfill your soul\’s desires.
Alithia finds herself staying at the opulent Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul for a literary convention, in the same room where Agatha Christie wrote Murder on the Orient Express.
This is just a coincidental fact with little real significance, though the hotel\’s brand promotion may have helped with the production budget. She impulsively purchases a priceless glass object from a market, brings it back to her apartment, and a Djinn—played by Idris Elba—who is initially enormous but then shrinks to human size—emerges.
This djinn has been imprisoned inside this glass ornament for three thousand years, and he longs to be freed and share his amazing tale of monarchs, princes, and treachery. He also longs to fulfill Alithia\’s wishes
A story of isolation and loneliness, of aging and accomplishments, of what might have been and what might yet be, is recounted through the secretive imagination of Alithea with the assistance of a mystic spirit that she manages to liberate from a bottle while visiting Istanbul.
Even if this isn\’t the best or the most profound movie you\’ll see this year, it might nonetheless make you wonder what three wishes you might have—and particularly how to word them so they don\’t flop.
